Reading Body Language to Communicate

As a manager, you must learn the importance of reading body language. There is more than one way to communicate and it is not just through words that we can get our points across. Managers who seek to understand body language in meetings, individual conversations and while working will be able to tell if their employees are motivated in their jobs or if they are slacking off. It is also important to be aware of how you project yourself as a manager and leader of the pack. Your body language speaks volumes as well.

Reading Body Language

Reading body language is also known as non verbal communication skills because it is through your actions and not your words that you can derive meaning from what you are trying to communicate. If you combine these with verbal cues, it is easier to understand the person and be able to respond the right way. Some of the non-verbal cues or body language that you need to look out for are the following: eye contact, posture, position of arms and legs, bodily gestures and the way a person dresses. If you learn to see the importance of communication using the following non-verbal cues, you will have more effective communication channels within your organization.


Eye Contact

When a person is unable to establish eye contact, this might mean a number of things when reading body language. The person might feel ashamed or uncomfortable to talk with his or her superiors. It could also mean that the employee might be hiding something and is ashamed of past failures. Whatever the reason may be, this would reveal a lot of things in his or her personality as well as demeanor in your office. You can then develop a proactive response to such cues.

Whether sitting down or standing up, you will be able to assess the personality of your employees. If the person is sitting tall or standing straight, it shows great confidence and pride in the person. However, if the person seems to be slumping in his or her chair or slouching while standing up, the confidence level of that person may be a little low. It is also possible that the person is feeling a little demotivated and therefore needs your help.

Bodily Movements

Some people tend to cross their arms and legs. This means that they may not be so open to communicate with other people. You will also see some people turn to the side while talking with you. This could be evaluated as being slightly engaged in the conversation. Others show frantic and excessive movement which can then be interpreted as being in a hurry. Reading body language properly includes watching out for these movements in the body may help you assess what the person is feeling or implying so that you can respond to it in a respectful and more appropriate way.

Clothing

This is also a good non-verbal cue to assess the character and communication style of the person. People who are trendy and up-to-date in terms of fashion may have the confidence that other people lack.
