The Importance of Communication

What is the power of one single word? How about the power of a single touch? Or the power of a single smile? What about withholding one single angry word? These things can change a conversation, soften an argument, begin a new friendship or even save a relationship. The importance of communication is evident in life, as just a single interaction can have a large effect on your whole world.

We have all heard and witnessed stories of how one word of encouragement, one word of apology, one gentle touch or one smile can improve a relationship, change a life or further a job. People that have done this create something new and exciting in their lives, which bring unity, harmony and joy not only into their own lives but into other people’s lives as well as. The kind of person that you become has largely to do with the way that you communicate and interact with the people around you. There is no greater area in your life that determines the nature of your relationships and the quality of life that you have than the development and learning of communication skills.

Different Forms of Communication

Little do we know, many times we are communicating our subconscious thoughts, our deep needs and our internal wants without knowing it. Verbal communication is the most obvious form of communication in our everyday lives, but our actions, gestures and even our choice of clothing and choice of music may be communicating with others without using words or thought. It is really important to take charge of what we are telling others so that we don’t give out the wrong message or signal. As we further explore into the importance of communication with respect to our surrounding relationships, we can start to recognize some of the things that we are doing well and some of the areas that need improvement, whether they are conscious decisions or subconscious actions.

As communication is the basis of all human interaction, it is of utmost importance for us to implement small, yet powerful changes in the way that we speak, listen and interact with others in order to create more effective, successful and meaningful conversations with those around us, whether it be in your family, your relationships, career or education.
