These skills are not acquired through finishing a college or Master’s degree. It can be taught, but as the person seeking to improve this skill, you must learn to practice effective communication styles and understand people. Always be aware of your actions and its effect on others. It is not just in actions that you should be aware of, you should also be cautious in the words that you speak. When you speak, make sure that it is with the intent of communicating which means you have to expect a response. If you already see that people are reacting towards you differently, then you should take a step back and review your words and your actions to ensure you are enhancing your interpersonal skills and not decreasing them. Always be positive and constructive in making comments. Take the time to consider other people’s feelings and show empathy. This means that in order to be able to relate to other people, you must place yourself in their situation and think of how you will react if you have seen yourself conduct a certain way.
Understand Before Being Understood
It is also beneficial to seek to understand rather than first be understood. In order to do this, you must be ready to listen with an open and mind and open heart. Listening skills is not simply hearing the words but it is taking the time to process them before responding. By taking this time to process, you can fully assess the situation and know exactly in what way to respond without hurting or humiliating the other person. In so doing, you will be able to use your interpersonal skills to form deep personal relationships with the people around you and communicate with them more effectively.
For those who are lacking these interpersonal skills, not all hope is lost. There are books, videos, training and workshops that they can utilize in order to develop these very important skills sets. It would be a good thing to proactively seek every opportunity to grow your interpersonal skills and become more effective in communicating as well as relating to other people as this reinforces the importance of communication.
