Non Verbal Communication Is More Important Than You Think

Is it possible to communicate without saying any of the words with non verbal communication?  Although you may not have the whole picture of what complete communication entails, it is possible to achieve this with the usage of non verbal communication. This is a type of communication where you relay information without the use of words. This type of communication can be done purposefully, unconsciously or based on societal cues. Some may not fully understand the meaning of these non verbal cues, but if you start to pay attention and really look into it, you will realize that it is just as important as verbal communication.

Non Verbal Communication is Body Language

Some of the most common types of non verbal communication include body language, facial expressions, and even fashion. Let’s define these non verbal cues one by one: Body language is the most common of all. Notice that when people want to say something to another person without saying a word, they would use body language as a way of communicating. They can kiss, hug, pat someone’s back, salute and even do a high-five. These simple yet wonderful gestures have the power to change moods, impressions and emotions. Another common non verbal cue is facial expression. This is considered as one of the most powerful and influential ways of conveying a message in a non verbal manner. Just look at how a simple smile or frown can make or ruin someone’s day. An expression of anger is exhibited by an angry face, a gloomy emotion by a sad face and extreme happiness with a good laugh and captivating smile. These facial expressions are so powerful that it can either make or break a situation. Cultural beliefs and differences may vary, but rarely are there misinterpretations with facial expressions. It has become one of the world’s best non verbal languages and will always be, which is why being good at reading body language is critical.

Non verbal communication can also be evident in fashion. Many people don’t know that clothing can immediately communicate a person’s association to a group. People dress up not only for the sake of showing off beautiful or out-of-this-world wardrobes, but also as a way of expressing themselves – their individuality and uniqueness. Identifying a person’s membership through clothes are best exhibited with the kinds of clothes they wear – monks in robes, cultural pieces for different cultural subgroups, avant-garde outfits for those who want to look extra modern and different, tattoos and accessories  and many more. The clothes you wear identify the kind of person you want to convey. You may not know it, but your outfits of choice are a sign of a non verbal cue. You don’t just display your fashion sense, but also the way you express and see yourself – confidently or with lack of confidence.

Truly, non verbal cues are more important than you think and display what you are thinking and feeling on the inside without uttering a word. They are not expressed in words, but they create a big impact by just a simple gesture, facial expression or even by just clothing yourself.  If you want to incorporate and learn more about the importance of body language in your daily interaction with others, you need to check out the Rock Solid Body Language program.  Learn to reprogram your body language so that you no longer appear nervous, but confident and relaxed.  You’ll be sure to notice positive changes in your interpersonal interactions when you employ non verbal communication as well!
